What is the Difference Between Mineral Oil and Synthetic Oil

The two main types of engine oils are Mineral engine oil and Synthetic engine oil. An individual may choose either of the two variants depending upon the recommendation of the vehicle manufacturer.

Synthetic oils are made from high quality group III and/or group IV base oils which have a distillation process that takes place to refine the oil and eliminate aromatics while increasing saturation.


Conventional mineral oils are made from group I and/or group II base oils which have a less sophisticated refining process. This process makes the oil more suitable for the latest varieties of engines as it removes impurities. There are fully synthetic oils, semi-synthetic and synthetic blend oils available in the market.

Synthetic oils offer more stability, less friction and last around twice as long as the mineral oils. There are various companies that sell the necessary products to keep your engine efficient.

The direct development of a lubricant from crude oil results in the production of mineral oil. This oil is able to offer stability, longevity and lubrication even at high temperatures.

Following are some of the advantages of using synthetic oil over mineral oil for your engine:

Lubrication – The synthetic oils begin to lubricate as soon as they are used in the engine. Unlike conventional lube oil, the lube oil also continues to provide lubrication to the parts under high temperatures. This property of the oil prevents friction between engine parts, thus allowing the engine to work efficiently and have a longer service life. There are many lubricant manufacturers who make such products.


Stability – Kinematic viscosity is a measure of a fluid’s internal resistance to flow under gravitational forces. Smooth oil will flow easily and give better and faster results. Synthetic oils maintain viscosity at high and low temperatures for longer time periods. Synthetic oil is less prone to changes in temperature and driving conditions than conventional mineral oil and that allows the oil to perform longer and thus have a long change interval.

Degradation – Synthetic oils are known for their resistance to oxidation. This means that the oil can undergo difficult situations without breaking down. The engine gets better protection and thus the engine is able to provide efficient and long lasting service.

Deposits – Sludge refers to the deposits that oils leave behind on the various parts of the engine after a period of time when they start to break down. Synthetic oils have a longer service life; they stick onto the engine easily and do not break down like conventional mineral oil. This is why the deposits left by synthetic oils are less than other oils.

Individuals must carefully choose the correct type of oil for their engine to ensure maximum efficiency with minimum maintenance and repair costs.
